59 San Lorenzo - Librarians & Good Crops
Patron of Cooks, Librarians, the Poor and August crops.
San Lorenzo was one of the seven Deacons of the Church whose job it was to give help to the poor and needy. When persecution broke out and the Pope was to be executed, Lorenzo cried, "Where are you going without me?" The Pope answered not to worry because Lorenzo would join him in three days. Lorenzo went quickly to distribute all his wealth to the poor. When the prefect for Rome heard this, he demanded that Lorenzo give his wealth to him. Lorenzo brought him all the poor and needly of Rome saying,"This is the treasure of the church!" The Prefect was outraged and sentenced Lorenzo to a slow and torturous death. He was roasted on an iron grill where he was heard to say,"Turn me over, I am done on this side!" Just before he died he said, "It is cooked enough now".
"O Holy San Lorenzo,
may I follow your example
and hold true to my faith,
selfessly giving to all those in need."
