130 St. Philippine Duchesne, Perseverance Amid Adversity
She was a French religious sister and prominent early member of the Religious Sacred Heart of Jesus. She came to New Orleans in 1818 realizing her dream of being a missionary in America. She traveled into the wilds of Missouri territory where she established a Sacred Heart convent and the first free school west of the Mississippi. In 1841 she helped establish a school for French and Potawatomi children in Kansas.
Quote and prayer by St. Duchesne:
"Do not look back to the past, nor forward to the future, claim only the
present, for it holds God's will."
"Lord, You alone are the Center in which I find rest. Give me your arm to support me, Your shoulders to carry me, Your breast to to lean upon, Your Cross to uphold me, Your Body to nourish me. In You, Lord, I sleep and rest in peace."
