Marion Bronze Monk Reading Bookends (set of two)
Vintage from 1910s
Richly colored, high-quality, heavy set of antique original Bronze bookends featuring a monk seated reading a book. Circa 1919. These bookends are in red and bronze with white book pages. Each bookend stands 7 1/2" tall, 4 1/8" wide, 4 1/8" deep, and weighs 3 lbs. 8 oz. (7 lbs. for the pair). They are in good condition with some paint loss that is normal for the age. There are no breaks, touch-ups, or, repairs. They are completely original. These antique bookends were made using the much coveted and highly collectible bronze-clad method of production which utilized electricity via an electrode built into the plaster mold of the subject piece. Bronze was then electroformed onto the plaster mold. This was extremely innovative in the 1920s. Unfortunately, it was also very costly for labor and materials. Some bookends could take as long as three days to be completed. They created some of the most detailed and sought-after bookends we have today.
